History and contents of the scientific bird collection

Much of the early history of the bird department can not be separated from the general history of the museum: the first scientists solely dedicated to birds did not arrive until 1928, and though some collection managers or taxidermist specialized on birds long before this, one can not speak of a more or less independant bird department.
